Teaching Philosophy
I believe that musicians are citizens of the world, and music is their international language. Musical training requires discipline and focus, but it should not confine a student’s thoughts and attention to a narrow tradition or a limited field of ideas and conventions. Ideas and technique can be learned from many fields, and inspiration can come from around the world. I ask my students to become aware of all aspects of their performance and to be open to learning new techniques in their practice.
Violin teaching is both an art and a science. The science of violin teaching has progressed with the advance of science in general, and one of my goals is to teach my students to use any science that can be useful for the art of music. The Alexander technique, based on the innovative studies of Frederick Alexander, is one of the most effective special techniques to which I expose my students when teaching them how to balance the base kinesthetic of the body with activities such as playing music, walking and running. The physical and mental benefits help students to manage their playing, give performances that are different and appealing to audiences, and prepare for long and healthy performing careers.
